SPIE Sarajevo student branch established!
On December 12, the establishment of the SPIE (International Association of Optics and Photonics) student branch at the University of Sarajevo was officially approved!
It is the first SPIE student branch in the Balkans ( https://spie.org/membership/student-services/student -chapters). The opening of the SPIE branch provides great opportunities for scholarships for student activities, applications for scientific research grants, academic visits and exchanges in the field of photonics and optics.
SPIE Student Association was founded on the basis of successful results achieved during 2019 and 2020:
- workshops held
- “Workshop in the field of optical systems” held on December 27, 2019 (https://www.tk.etf.unsa.ba/bs/2020/01/06/odrzana-spie-radionica-u-oblasti-optickih-sistema-2019/)
- “Modern trends in the field of silicon photonics, optical fibers and high power lasers” held on 03.03.2020. godine (https://www.tk.etf.unsa.ba/bs/2020/02/18/spie-radionica-moderni-trendovi-u-oblasti-silicijske-fotonike-optickih-vlakana-i-lasera-visoke- power-2/),
- procured basic equipment for equipping the laboratory in optics and photonics, which has already been installed at the Department of Telecommunications.
- active SPIE membership – https://spie.org/membership/student-services?SSO=1
- active contribution of students in the presence of workshops, activities of forming a student branch (writing the official application, the statute of the association, held student meetings) and communication with the SPIE Chapter Board.
The advisor of the student SPIE branch is Doc.dr Darijo Raca, and the leader is Elmin Sejdić, a final year master’s student (https://spie.org/membership/student-services/student-chapters/student-chapter?chapter_id=2025559).

The SPIE international office is located in Bellingham, Washington and the SPIE Europe office is located in Cardiff, Wales.
